Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are battery-operated tobacco products. They turn nicotine and other chemicals into aerosol you inhale.* Most e-cigarettes look like:

  • Cigarettes
  • Pipes
  • Cigars
  • Pens

*Note: In the past, e-cigarettes were referred to as vapor products. However, they do not produce vapor. They produce aerosol.

E-Cigarettes may be made of toxic ingredients. However, there is little research and information on the types of ingredients. It is also unknown how safe they are to use or the long-term health effects.

E-cigarettes are not:

  • FDA-approved quit-smoking devices
  • A safe alternative to other forms of tobacco

They are, however, attractive to youth. This includes those who have never smoked cigarettes or other tobacco products. [19] E-cigarettes may lead kids to try other tobacco products—including cigarettes—which are known to cause disease and lead to premature death.
