Michigan Automated Prescription System

The Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS) is the prescription drug monitoring program for the State of Michigan. Prescription monitoring programs are used to identify and prevent drug diversion at the prescriber, pharmacy and patient levels by collecting Schedule 2-5 controlled substance prescriptions dispensed by pharmacies and practitioners. This data enables practitioners to determine if patients are receiving controlled substances from other providers and to assist in the prevention of prescription drug abuse. For more information and additional resources, click here to access the MAPS website.

Physician Clinical Support Systems — Methadone and Buprenorphine

The Physician Clinical Support System for Methadone (PCSS-M) is a free, nationwide program through which healthcare providers needing information and mentoring on methadone treatment for opioid addiction and/or pain can connect with experts in the field. (A Physician Clinical Support System for Buprenorphine [PCSS-B] is also available.)

Screening for Drug Use in General Medical Settings

  • Clinician's Screening Tool—(NIDA-Modified Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test or NMASSIST) This web-based interactive tool guides clinicians through a short series of screening questions and, based on the patient's responses, generates a substance involvement score that suggests the level of intervention needed. The tool also provides links to resources for conducting a brief intervention and treatment referral, if warranted.
  • Online Clinician's Screening Tool

Note: NIDA recommends reading the Resource Guide: Screening for Drug Use in General Medical Settings before using the screening tool with your patients.
