The issues related to smoking and nicotine addiction are serious. Smoking can drain health, your resources and productivity. Not only is smoking addictive, but it causes bad breath, yellows teeth, can shorten your breath and is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths.
Before you take the next puff, consider these additional health factors:
- Compromised immune system
- Reduced bone density
- Constricted arterial flow
- Accelerated heart rate
- Elevated blood pressure
- Scarring on lung tissue increasing risk for COPD
- Increased chances of pregnancy problems
- Changes in blood chemistry
- Damaged blood vessels
- Creation of a secondhand smoke environment that endangers others
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and its partners will provide information about tobacco use and abuse. They will offer ways to improve the health of local communities and ultimately our state.
