LANSING, Mich. – Wednesday’s 16th annual Children’s Trust Fund Pam Posthumus Signature Auction Event raised $493,044 to prevent child abuse and neglect, bringing the total donations in the event’s history to about $6.5 million.
About 650 people attended the event at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center. They helped children by bidding on items such as trips to experience Elton John in Dublin, Ireland, Barcelona, Spain, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Disney World in Orlando, Fla; concert tickets for Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town, Kenny Chesney and Kesha; and suites for MSU football and Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings games.
The event is the major fundraiser for the Children’s Trust Fund, which is within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). It pays for services such as respite care, home visitations, child development support and other targeted services allowing local partners around the state to continue to provide education and other prevention programs.
The auction is named in memory of Pam Posthumus, a tireless advocate for preventing child abuse. Pam Posthumus was appointed to the Children’s Trust Fund Board of Directors in 1997 and became its chair in 2002. She was the wife of former Michigan Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus, who was among those attending Wednesday. Others in attendance included Gov. Rick Snyder, Lt. Gov. Brian Calley and MDHHS Director Nick Lyon.
Andrea Fischer Newman, of Delta Air Lines, the official carrier for the event, was honored with this year’s Children’s Advocate Award.
Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof presented the award to Fischer Newman, noting that due to her efforts to secure donations of international and domestic flights, the Children’s Trust Fund has leveraged additional support from other donors to build travel and entertainment packages that have raised tens of thousands of dollars over the years.
Lyon said: “It’s impossible to state how much Andrea’s contributions have meant to Michigan children and families. “She is an excellent example of the generous supporters who have donated time, money and prizes so that the Children’s Trust Fund can fulfill its mission of funding programs in local communities that prevent child abuse.”
Created by the Michigan Legislature in 1982, the Children’s Trust Fund within MDHHS is Michigan’s only statewide nonprofit organization solely dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect. It has raised more than $60 million to support programs that have affected more than 6 million children and families.
