Cheeseman Road in St. Ignace temporarily closed starting April 30
April 25, 2025
ST. IGNACE, Mich. - Due to ongoing work on the northbound I-75 overpass on at Cheeseman Road in the city of St. Ignace, Mackinac County, Cheeseman Road will be temporarily closed to traffic starting Wednesday, April 30. Traffic will be detoured to US-2. One lane in each direction will remain open on I-75.
Cheeseman Road is expected to be reopened to traffic with a temporary traffic signal by Sunday, May 4.
The closure is required for the safety of motorists during removal of overhead bridge deck and beams.
"Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. "By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let's build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying, local jobs."
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is investing about $9 million to rebuild both I-75 overpasses over Cheeseman Road, including deck replacement, bearing replacement, substructure repairs, beam end repairs, steel cleaning and coating, and approach work. This project is scheduled to be completed in two years, with work on northbound I-75 to be completed this year and southbound I-75 in 2026. No work will occur during winter shutdown periods.
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 86 jobs.
