I-194 overnight closure April 25-26 for M-96 bridge work in Battle Creek

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - There will be an overnight closure of I-194 at M-96 (Columbia Avenue) in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, as part of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and contractor C.A. Hull project to improve the M-96 bridge over I-194.

"Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping

Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. "By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let's build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying, local jobs."

I-194 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, April 25, through 8 a.m. Saturday, April 26, as crews remove the existing bridge barrier wall on M-96. During the closure, I-194 traffic will be routed onto the interchange ramps (Exit 2).

This work is part of a $4.4 million investment to repair the M-96 bridge. Work includes paving and partial deck replacement, expansion joint replacement, structural steel repair, substructure patching, concrete surface coating, full-depth and steel repairs, signal work, lighting and approach work on M-96. Overall work is expected to be completed by Friday, Oct. 17.

One lane will remain open in each direction on M-96 and I-194 using traffic shifts and lane closures for a majority of the project. There will be three-week closures of the ramps, with those dates announced once determined by the contractor.

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 42 jobs.
