Free soil lead tests offered during Response Resource and Opportunity Fair being hosted on May 12

Free lead inspection and job opportunities available

LANSING, Mich. – City of Benton Harbor families are urged to bring in soil from their gardens to be tested for lead at no cost during the City of Benton Harbor Water Response Resource and Opportunity Fair on Thursday, May 12 at the Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor, Joel E. Smilow Teen Center, 190 W. Empire Drive, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Soil testing results will take about 15 minutes and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services staff will be available to explain ways to limit exposure to lead in soil while gardening. A video is available to provide guidance on how to take a soil sample and instructions are also available in this flyer. Families will also be able to get information about services and resources available to City of Benton Harbor residents to help reduce or eliminate lead from their homes.

Resources will include:

  • Home water testing kits
  • Free bottled water
  • Filters and filter installation education
  • Free lead inspection sign-up
  • Job opportunities

The Resource and Opportunity fair will also feature employers seeking employees, water response resources and information, as well as lead service line replacement information. The event will include information and representatives from local community organizations, the City of Benton Harbor, Berrien County Health Department, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
