Michigan Office of Services to the Aging Director, Lynn Alexander, today announced that the Commission on Services to the Aging appointed 21 members to the State Advisory Council on Aging. The 43-member council reviews and studies issues relevant to the aging population and makes policy recommendations to the Commission on Services to the Aging.
"These individuals will do an outstanding job on behalf of Michigan seniors," said Alexander. "I look forward to their innovative ideas and recommendations."
"We are delighted to have such a talented and knowledgeable group of members," said Elwin Johnson, chairman of the Michigan Commission on Services to the Aging.
Appointed to a one-year term:
Jeanne Karr, of Hudson, is a Regional Supervisor with Friends Who Care of Adrian.
Appointed to two-year terms are:
Gerald Betters, of Powers is reappointed. Betters is Administrator of Pinecrest Medical Care Facility and a member of the UPCAP Services, Inc. Advisory Board.
Linda Geml, of Kalamazoo, is a Supervisor of Adult Services for the Van Buren County Family Independence Agency and serves on the Region IV Area Agency on Aging Advisory Board.
Hope Figgis, of Traverse City is reappointed. Figgis is a Mental Health Consultant with Catholic Human Services of Traverse City.
Russell Fogg, of Northville, serves on the board and Executive Committee of The Senior Alliance, Inc.
Richard Haskens, of Lansing, is a counselor for SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives). He is a member of the Tendercare West Nursing Home Family Council.
The Rev. Billie Hipwood, of Turner, is Chairperson of the Arenac County Council on Aging, a board member of the Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency and chairperson of its Advisory Council.
Carol Jones, of Sturgis, is reappointed. Jones is an employee of the St. Joseph County Commission on Aging.
Audrey Malling, of Gowen, is reappointed. Malling is active with the Greenville Area Senior Citizens Center and serves on the Area Association on Aging of Western Michigan Inc. Advisory Council.
John Myers, of Detroit, is reappointed. Myers is a board member of the Detroit Area Agency on Aging and was a delegate to the 1995 White House Conference on Aging.
John Pedit, of Redford, is Volunteer Coordinator for the Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program in western Wayne County and serves on the board of The Senior Alliance, Inc.
Dr. Richard Redden, of Mt. Pleasant, is reappointed. He works for Green Thumb, Inc. as marketing assistant for ExperienceWorks!, a non-profit staffing service for mature workers.
Gail Ringelberg, of Grand Haven, is Executive Director of the North Ottawa County Council on Aging. Ringelberg is co-chair of the Northern Ottawa Area Community Coalition and a member of the local United Way Board of Directors.
Carol Sichterman, of Kentwood, is reappointed. Sichterman is Chair Elect of Dietary Consultant Services and the Executive Secretary of the Michigan Dietetic Association.
Alberta Trimble, of Detroit, is reappointed. Trimble is a registered administrative nurse with the Detroit Public School's Medical Screening Program.
Terry Vear, of Hillsdale, is reappointed. Vear is Executive Director of Hillsdale County Senior Services and Chair of the Hillsdale City Housing Commission. She is also secretary of the Michigan Directors of Services to the Aging.
Janet Watz, of Lapeer, works at the United Way of Lapeer County and a member of Lapeer County's Senior Coalition, a subcommittee of Community Support Council of Lapeer County.
Dr. Donald C. Weaver, of Delton, is reappointed. Weaver is Professor Emeritus from Western Michigan University in the School of Education.
Margaret Wenzel, of Ann Arbor, is a Program Coordinator and Nurse at the Adult Day Service of HealthSource.
Dr. Donna Weinreich, of Plainwell, is Director of the Gerontology Program at Western Michigan University. Weinreich serves on the Michigan Society of Gerontology board.
Andrew Wong, of Beverly Hills, is reappointed. Wong is a member of the Elder Advisors to Research Committee at Wayne State University's Institute of Gerontology.
