Shamayim, known as "Mama Shu" in her community, is the Founder of Avalon Village in Highland Park. The Village is a community non-profit organization on Avalon Street focused on redeveloping a blighted block into a sustainable neighborhood center. She also serves as a reserve police officer and chaplain in Highland Park. Harris is a board member of the Highland Park Board of Education and the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency. She has also served as a past board member on the Highland Park Charter Revision Commission and the Highland Park Housing Commission.
