Activities for October 2019
October 17: presented on codes and the TACTIC report at the Midwest Lead and Healthy Homes Conference in Indianapolis. Project partners from Battle Creek and Grand Rapids were also at the conference, allowing us to talk in person about next steps in both those cities and get contacts for the City of Albion.
Activities for September 2019

September 19: presented TACTIC report on a webinar for the Flint Lead Free group, which is co-chaired by the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. City officials also attended the webinar and engaged in conversation with the group about where the city is at with the recommendations and where they hope to go.

September 18 and following week: phone call/email with Jill Keast from the Muskegon County Health Department about potential project work and contacts in Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, and Whitehall.
Activities for August 2019
- Phone call with Lydia Starrs from the Community Foundation for Greater Flint and scheduled a presentation for September 19 to their community coalition.
- Discussed presenting to the Grand Rapids City Commission with Karyn Ferrick; this may be rescheduled for later in September.
- Ongoing conversations with Paul Haan in Grand Rapids about their community-driven advocacy efforts, which draw heavily from our TACTIC report, to ensure that our conversations with the city are coordinated with local efforts.
- Presented to CLEEC on August 5. Slides are attached.
Activities for March 2019
Update: We completed draft reports for Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, Flint and Detroit, and we completed the internal review for each at the National Center for Healthy Housing. The draft reports for each jurisdiction are currently under review by personnel in each jurisdiction. We are planning trips to each jurisdiction in April 2019 to discuss each jurisdiction’s comments on their respective reports, which will enable us to finalize each one on time, as well as the combined summary report.
We also completed our progress report on the State’s website. The project remains on track and within budget.
Activities Completed November 1-November 30, 2018
- Obtained code inspection checklist for Grand Rapids
- Completed code comparisons for Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Battle Creek; Flint is pending
- Developed interview questions for use in face-to-face meetings with local personnel
- Scheduled on-site meetings with code and related personnel in Battle Creek & Grand Rapids (both Dec 18) and Detroit & Flint (Dec 19)
- Completed and submitted second quarterly report in e-grams system (I’m pretty sure this went through this time, but please double check on your end)
Activities Completed October 1-October 31, 2018
This past month (Oct 2016), we completed teleconferences with local personnel in Detroit and Flint. We also completed initial reviews of existing code language in Battle Creek, Grand Rapids and Detroit. On the teleconferences, local personnel committed to providing local protocols used in Flint, Detroit and Grand Rapids. The teleconferences were held as follows:
10/19/18 – Call with Dilep Patel and Arthur Rushin, Detroit BSEED (Detroit Buildings Safety Engineering and Environmental Department)
10/16/18 – Call with Nicole Rodden Bowen, Director of Single Family Housing Repair in Detroit
10/18/18 - Call with Dr. Pamela Pugh, Lydia Starrs, Billie Mitchell, Jenny LaChance.
We have also begun preliminary planning to conduct site visits in the four jurisdictions (Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, and Battle Creek) possibly in early December.

Aug 30, 2018 Teleconference with Flint personnel: Ms. Suzanne Wilcox (Director of Planning & Development), Dr. Pamela Pugh (Flint Chief Health Advisor) and NCHH staff Dr. David Jacobs and Ms. Sarah Goodwin was completed. The project was described. Documents to be reviewed by NCHH will be forthcoming from Flint that are associated with local codes and inspection procedures.
Aug 29, 2018 Teleconference with Grand Rapids Lead Free Kids Advisory Committee (Mayor’s group) – The nature of the TACTIC Project was described. The Mayor stated that she was pleased that Grand Rapids had been selected as one of the 4 local jurisdictions. After the project progresses further, the possibility of a face-to-face meeting with the Advisory Committee was discussed
Aug 22, 2018 Teleconference with Mark Kincannan, director of Detroit’s lead code enforcement program. He agreed to assemble key staff in Detroit for a teleconference to be scheduled shortly after Labor Day when his staff is back from vacations.
Aug 16,2018 Code review template to be used for all 4 jurisdictions’ code review initiated. Final draft expected by mid-September
Aug 16, 2018 Financial status report for July was submitted. We’ve also reviewed the requirements for the obligation report in preparation for that becoming available on Sept 8, 2018
