Michigan BioTrust - Announcements
Join our Community Values Advisory Board – Seeking Organizational Applicants!
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) established the Michigan BioTrust for Health in 2009 to manage the storage and research use of blood spots collected during newborn screening. Because nearly every Michigan infant undergoes newborn screening, the number of people impacted by the BioTrust is immense, reaching all populations. The BioTrust Community Values Advisory Board is a group of 15-19 individuals who provide essential public input in the development of BioTrust policies and community engagement initiatives. Most seats are filled by representatives from community and disease advocacy organizations, with three positions reserved for Members at Large (MAL) to represent the general public.
We are currently seeking organizations to fill open seats on the CVAB. Organizations with cultural, religious, or historical connections, as well as health professionals and disease advocacy groups are invited to apply for these open CVAB seats. If your organization is interested in applying for membership, please complete the online BioTrust CVAB Organizational Application. Applications are due to the BioTrust program by February 10, 2025.
If you have any questions about the role of the CVAB or the application process, contact Michele Fritz, the BioTrust Coordinator, at BioTrust@michigan.gov.
Call for Scientific Advisory Board Members!
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) established the Michigan BioTrust for Health in 2009 to manage the storage and research use of blood spots collected during newborn screening. The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) is a vital component of the BioTrust, ensuring a rigorous scientific review process for the use of Michigan dried blood spots in medical and public health research.
The SAB is comprised of researchers with scientific, clinical, and public health expertise who evaluate the scientific merit of proposed studies. Members serve renewable three-year terms and are generally asked to review 1-2 proposals annually as part of a panel.
If you, or a qualified colleague, is interested in applying for a SAB position, please complete the online SAB application form. Applications are due to the BioTrust program by February 10, 2025.
For more details about the SAB or the application process, please reach out to Michele Fritz, BioTrust Coordinator, at BioTrust@michigan.gov.
Choices About Leftover Blood Spot Use
Parents, and individuals aged 18 and older, have choices about how leftover blood spots are used after newborn screening is complete and are allowed to change previous BioTrust consent decisions. Some of these options include allowing their use in public health research through the BioTrust for Health Program, having them returned for personal use, or requesting the destruction of the blood spots.
To learn more or update your BioTrust consent decision, visit the BioTrust Consent Options Webpage. You can find the necessary Directive Forms there to make or modify your choice.
