MEDICAID

  • The AGAO cannot make changes to your child’s Medicaid plan. You must call Michigan Enrolls at 1-888-367-6557 regarding plan changes.
  • Many medical providers will check a child’s Medicaid by using the child’s name and date of birth. This sometimes results in previous, closed Medicaid cases showing, making it appear as if there is no active Medicaid.

Your child’s Medicaid should be checked/run by their recipient identification number on their card and NOT by their name and date of birth. The child’s ID number will change after they are adopted, and the provider should be using the new ID number.

If you continue to have issues with your adoption or guardianship assistance Medicaid, please email MDHHS-CSA-AGAO-Ongoing-General@michigan.gov.

  • The AGAO cannot issue new Medicaid cards. If you did not receive your mihealth card, or it is lost, stolen, or damaged, please call the Medicaid Beneficiary Help Line at 1-800-642-3195.
  • Only one parent/guardian can be listed on a child’s Medicaid information as the alternate payee.

If you wish to change the alternate payee to a different parent/guardian, you must submit a request in writing and have both parents/guardians sign the request. This request can be mailed, faxed, or emailed directly to MDHHS-CSA-AGAO-Ongoing-General@michigan.gov.

The alternate payee can authorize the release of information to a secondary parent or guardian. The alternate payee would need to complete the DCH-1183 form which can be mailed or faxed to MDHHS. • Yes. When a child has private insurance coverage, that policy will be billed as the primary insurance and Medicaid will be billed as a secondary insurance. If there have been changes to your child’s insurance, such as new private insurance coverage or loss of private insurance coverage, please visit the following website to report those changes: How to Update Third Party Liability Information (michigan.gov)
  • Please email MDHHS-CSA-AGAO-Ongoing-General@michigan.gov to update your child’s name, SSN, or address.
  • Your child’s adoption Medicaid will open retroactively to the date of adoptive placement. You may receive a letter stating that your child’s Medicaid was closed. This is a notice of your child’s foster care Medicaid is closing.
  • When a child’s adoption assistance case closes, their Medicaid also closes. This is a standard letter sent by Medicaid to notify parents of this closure.
