Closed Adoption Record Retention: Local Office and Adoption Agencies
All MCI/permanent ward and adoption records are required to be sent to the Document Control Unit (DCU) located in the AGAO after the case has been closed for one year. It is the responsibility of adoption agencies to send closed adoption records for all finalized adoptions to the MDHHS local office who had foster care case responsibility. The MDHHS local office will combine the adoption record with the foster care record.
When an adoption agency closes or stops completing adoptions, the agency is required to transfer its adoption records to the Department for permanent retention. These records are sent directly to DCU.
