MiHER for residents: how to get your rebate
MiHER for residents: how to get your rebate
The Michigan Home Energy Rebates (MiHER) Program will fund energy efficiency and electrification upgrades for approximately 15,000 Michigander homes, helping to reduce monthly utility costs, reduce energy use, and enhance comfort and indoor air quality.
The amount of funding a home is eligible for varies depending on:
- The household's income,
- Identified energy efficiency upgrades for the home,
- Estimated energy savings,
- Rebate limits (established by U.S. Department of Energy and EGLE),
- The selected upgrades being installed, and
- Total project cost.

Michigan residents can follow the steps below to obtain a home energy rebate. We are currently accepting applications from low-to-moderate-income residents across the state.
If you have questions about the MiHER Program, please visit our frequently asked questions for more information.
In order to get a rebate, you must first apply and be accepted into the MiHER program.
Once accepted into the MiHER Program, contact an approved MiHER contractor to get a home assessment. Approved Contractors and their contact information can be found in the MiHER portal.
Eligible rebate work must be performed by an approved MiHER Contractor.
A home assessment will identify the energy upgrades needed for your home.
After you select a MiHER contractor, they will schedule a time to walk through your home and evaluate things like insulation, windows, doors, heating and cooling systems, as well as major appliances. They will also gather your energy bill information.
The assessment and your energy bill information will provide the information needed to select the appropriate rebates for your home.
After the project has been approved, your selected MiHER contractor will begin the energy upgrades on your home.
After the energy upgrades are complete, an inspection on the work will need to be completed.
This inspection will verify that all work was completed correctly, and capture the necessary information to claim the rebates.
After the energy upgrades and post installation inspection are completed, the MiHER contractor submits the rebate paperwork and receives the rebate.
If there is any remaining balance, it is the home owner's responsibility to pay the MiHER contractor.
