MARSHALL, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is starting work this week on the Marshall Modernization Project in support of the Marshall Area Jobs, Opportunity and Recreation (MAJOR) Campus.
Work this year includes converting M-96 (Michigan Avenue) into a four-lane boulevard from east of Eden Street to I-69, adding an auxiliary lane to northbound and southbound I-69 between Michigan Avenue and I-94, and rebuilding the I-69 interchange at Michigan Avenue as a diverging diamond interchange (DDI).
A DDI is an alternative interchange that improves safety, increases traffic flow and can reduce construction costs. They have been successfully implemented at several locations throughout Michigan in recent years, helping reduce crashes and congestion.
To navigate a DDI, drivers follow signs, signals and pavement markings to cross to the left side of the roadway after the first set of traffic signals. Vehicles going straight proceed through a second set of traffic signals and cross back to the right side of the road. All left turns onto the freeway are free flowing. MDOT's YouTube channel features a video showing how drivers navigate the I-96/Cascade Road DDI in Grand Rapids Township, Kent County.
Throughout this year's work, at least one lane will be open in each direction on M-96 and I-69. There will be ramp closures later in the year, with those closure dates shared with the public as soon as they are determined.
Work in 2026 and 2027 will include converting M-96 to a four-lane boulevard from east of Eden Street to 11 Mile Road, rebuilding the I-94 interchange at M-311 Exit 104, and resurfacing I-94 between M-311 and I-69.
