Bridge work closing Edward Hines Drive in Wayne County delayed to March 3 due to weather and material delays
February 19, 2025
LIVONIA, Mich. - As part of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) bridge replacement project in the city of Livonia, Edward Hines Drive will now be closed between Newburgh and Wayne roads beginning Monday, March 3, due to weather and materials delays.
Once work in location beings, crews will be demolishing and rebuilding the Edward Hines Drive bridge over Ann Arbor Road, demolishing and rebuilding the shared-use path, and rebuilding pavement leading up to the bridge. The shared-use path will be maintained via a temporary bridge for pedestrians only.
Eastbound Edward Hines Drive traffic will be detoured via northbound Newburgh Road, eastbound Ann Arbor/Plymouth Road, southbound Farmington Road and westbound Joy Road back to eastbound Edward Hines Drive. Westbound Edward Hines Drive will be detoured via eastbound Joy Road, northbound Farmington Road, westbound Ann Arbor/Plymouth Road and southbound Jughandle Road back to westbound Edward Hines Drive.
This is part of the $21.5 million bridge investment to replace bridges on Old M-14 (Ann Arbor Road) over the Middle Rouge River (built in 1925) and Edward Hines Drive over Ann Arbor Road (built in 1948). Work includes rebuilding intersections and modernizing traffic signals and is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Ann Arbor Road has been closed since early January between Newburgh Road and Market Street, west of Levan Road. Work there includes demolishing and rebuilding the Ann Arbor Road bridge over the Middle Rouge River, rebuilding pavement on Ann Arbor Road from Newburgh Road to Market Street and improving drainage.
Eastbound Ann Arbor Road traffic is being detoured via northbound Newburgh Road to eastbound Ann Arbor/Plymouth Road, while westbound Ann Arbor/Plymouth Road traffic is being detoured via southbound Newburgh Road to westbound Ann Arbor Road.
Additional work will occur later in the year at two Ann Arbor Road intersections (Newburgh and Plymouth roads) for rebuilding and traffic signal modernization.
Jobs numbers:
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 205 jobs.
Safety benefit:
The new bridges being built will provide a safer, smoother ride. The modernized traffic signals will improve traffic efficiency and flow.
