Project information:
In 2026, MDOT will rebuild more than 2 miles of M-46 from Muskegon Avenue to Home Street. Work includes asphalt surfacing, lane reconfiguration, new storm sewer, new concrete curb and gutter, concrete sidewalks, new sanitary sewer, and a new water main. The project will implement traffic calming measures to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians, including a four- to three-lane conversion and a dedicated left-turn lane.
During construction, Root Memorial Park will be closed to accommodate the proposed modifications at the M-46/First Steet intersection. The proposed changes will result in additional green space added to Root Memorial Park after construction. The temporary closure of the park is proposed under a de minimis finding under Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act of 1966.
The City of Muskegon has partnered with MDOT to create a website to provide more information regarding the project.
Public comment:
MDOT is seeking public input on the recreational impacts during construction and the proposed changes in additional greenspace to Root Memorial Park after construction. Provide input regarding recreational impacts either in-person, email, U.S. mail, or through the online comment form by March 10, 2025.
