In 2023, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is planning to remove two US-12 bridges over M-51 in Niles Township, Berrien County. MDOT has started a feasibility study for replacement of the current interchange. The study will identify future M-51 projects from the Michigan/Indiana state line to M-60 Business Route in Niles. The study will examine traffic operations, pavement treatment, storm sewer inspection, environmental resources, and public engagement.
Public input is important for identifying local priorities and key issues for future projects. MDOT encourages residents and businesses to help develop ideas for construction. Personal experiences and observations related to the safe and efficient operation of this interchange are a critical part of the planning process.
