I-96 traffic shift with lane, ramp closures begins Friday, April 3, in Livingston County
March 31, 2026
LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin a traffic shift of westbound I-96 traffic to the eastbound side of I-96 from Dorr Road to Chilson Road on Friday, April 3, in Livingston County. The following restrictions will be in place:
- Westbound I-96 Exit 141 to Grand River Avenue will be closed,
- The Latson Road entrance ramp to westbound I-96 will be closed, and
- Westbound I-96 will have two lanes closed from Dorr Road to Chilson Road.
This work is part of MDOT's $41 million investment to rebuild the I-96/Grand River Avenue interchange as a diverging diamond interchange. As part of the project, crews will be replacing the I-96 culvert over Ore Creek and the two I-96 bridges over Grand River Avenue.

Traffic restrictions:
This work will require closing westbound I-96 Exit 141 to Grand River Avenue from 9 a.m. Friday, April 3, until 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15. Traffic will be detoured via Exit 140 to northbound Latson Road to Grand River Avenue.

Jobs numbers:
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 347 jobs.
Safety benefit:
Closing the lanes will ensure the safety of workers and motorists. A DDI is an alternative interchange design that improves safety, increases traffic flow and reduces construction cost. There are fewer conflict points in a DDI compared to a conventional interchange (14 versus 26), with better sight distance at turns.
