MDOT seeking public comment on draft active transportation plan
April 16, 2025
GAYLORD, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking the public’s input on the draft North Region Active Transportation Plan, which will highlight current and proposed nonmotorized connections throughout the northernmost 21 counties of the Lower Peninsula.
The Northeast Michigan Council of Governments (NEMCOG) and Networks Northwest have been working with the MDOT North Region Active Transportation Committee, which includes representatives from several communities and organizations, to develop the North Region Active Transportation Plan. The plan will assemble both current and future separated pathways, bike lanes, wide shoulders, sidewalk connections and regional trails that provide a safe place for residents and visitors to walk or bike, increasing opportunities for improved health and wellbeing, access to recreational areas throughout northern lower Michigan, and alternative forms of transportation to get to major destinations.
"This plan will be used to guide decision-making and development of future active transportation facilities," said MDOT North Region Planner Heidi Phaneuf. "We are thankful for the support of all the trail groups, local governments, transportation agencies and tribal partners that helped in the development of this plan, sharing their visions that were woven together into this document."
The current draft of the plan will be available for 30 days of public comment, from April 17 to May 17, 2025. Once the comment period has concluded, the document will undergo additional formatting and finalization for distribution.
A copy of the plan can be downloaded from the NEMCOG website: https://www.discovernortheastmichigan.org/northregionplan.asp.
Comments can be submitted to Phaneuf by email at PhaneufH@Michigan.gov or by phone at 231-340-0326.
