DETROIT, Mich. - Weather permitting, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) contract crews will be removing the McClellan Avenue overpass above I-94 this weekend. This work will require closing I-94 between I-75 and M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) starting at 8 p.m. Friday, March 28. Both directions of I-94 are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, March 31.

Westbound I-94 through traffic will be detoured via southbound M-3 and northbound I-75 back to westbound I-94. All eastbound I-94 traffic will be detoured via southbound I-75 and northbound M-3 back to eastbound I-94.

Prior to the freeway closure, all entrance ramps to westbound I-94 will be closed from Cadieux Road to M-3. All entrance ramps to eastbound I-94 from West Grand Boulevard to M-53 (Van Dyke Avenue) will be closed. All ramps will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.

Originally built in 1957, the McClellan Avenue overpass was closed in March 2024 due to poor structural conditions. The overpass will not be replaced due to the future upgrades to the I-94/M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) interchange.
