The State Sites Cleanup Program was established in 1996 to facilitate the cleanup of contaminated sites when the state of Michigan is the owner or liable party. A total of $35 million in funding was made available, all of which has been spent or is currently obligated to ongoing remediation work. No additional funding is available to address unfunded projects.
Regardless of funding availability, on an annual basis all state departments and agencies are required to provide a list of the contaminated properties where they are considered the liable party. The State Sites Cleanup Program list identifies sites where the state is responsible for environmental conditions. This list is updated annually:
