On August 12, 2020, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that the Menominee River Area of Concern was “delisted” or removed from the international list of Great Lakes AOCs following successful restoration efforts.
The Menominee River is in the western Upper Peninsula and discharges into Green Bay (Lake Michigan). The former Menominee River Area of Concern includes the lower three miles of the river, from the Upper Scott Paper Company Dam (Park Mill) to the river mouth and includes the adjacent Green Bay shoreline from Seagull Bar in Marinette, Wisconsin, to Henes Park in Menominee, Michigan, and Green Island in Green Bay.
Historic industrial activity along the river resulted in contamination of sediments with high levels of arsenic, petroleum, and polychlorinated biphenyls. The site was also impacted by paint sludge and invasive species.
