Reminder: Claimants need 1099-G statement from UIA for income taxes
April 09, 2025
As tax season draws to a close, the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) reminds workers who received unemployment benefits in 2024 to make sure they have the proper statements needed to file accurately.
Anyone who received benefits last year must have the information found on their 1099-G, or Certain Government Payments, tax statement to complete their state and federal income taxes.
Claimants receive a copy of their 1099-G digitally in their Michigan Web Account Manager (MIWAM) account. Those who requested a paper version should have received it in the mail earlier this year.
To download your 1099-G from MIWAM, follow these four steps:
- Log into MiWAM.
- Click on the "I Want To" heading.
- Click on the "1099-G" link.
- Click on the 1099-G letter for the 2024 tax year and save a copy for your records.
You may need a physical copy of the 2024 1099-G tax statement, a scanned copy, or at least the information found on the statement to file your taxes accurately. The necessity of the tax statement and its information will depend on how you file your taxes.
The 1099-G shows the total amount of benefits paid to a claimant in 2024 and how much was withheld for state and federal taxes. Claimants can also choose to not have UIA withhold taxes from benefits paid.
Unemployment benefits are taxed in the year the money was paid out, which might not be in the same year you were unemployed. If you received a 1099 statement in 2024 first determine if you were issued any benefits that year – even if they were from a previous claim that may not have been filed in 2024.
The total benefit amount listed on the 1099-G may be higher than what was actually received due to automatic deductions. For example, there may be a discrepancy for some claimants if they had to repay an overpayment or fulfill court-ordered payments.
If you believe your 1099-G is incorrect, request a revised statement by downloading and submitting a Request to Correct Form 1099-G.
If you received a 1099 and you have not recently received payments or did not file a claim, you may be a victim of identity theft. If you receive any mail, correspondence, messages or notifications about taxes or benefits payments that seem suspicious, contact UIA as soon as possible and submit a Statement of Identity Theft.
More information can be found at the 1099-G tax statements page on the UIA website.
