Michigan Investor-Owned, Cooperative, and Municipal Electric Utilities
Michigan is served by a variety of utilities under different ownership structures.
Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs) are shareholder-owned businesses that can be publicly or privately held.
Cooperative Utilities (Co-ops) are owned by their customers, who are referred to as members and serve as shareholders of the company.
Municipal Utilities (Munis) are owned by the community and operated as a division of local government.
The Michigan Public Service Commission regulates Investor-Owned Utilities that operate within the State of Michigan.
