Algonac Teacher Who Uses Outdoor Learning Featured in Latest #proudMIeducator Video

LANSING – A group of Michigan students has enjoyed a unique outdoor learning experience that has strengthened their connection to their community.

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is pleased to announce the release of the latest #proudMIeducator video, featuring Nicole DeGowske, a fifth-grade teacher at Algonquin Elementary School in Algonac, located in Michigan’s Thumb.

Ms. DeGowske, her students, and the community have worked hard to transform an overgrown and unused outdoor space into a robust, magical outdoor learning environment with a pond for research, a walking trail, and benches for outdoor classroom learning.

“I think it’s cool to be outside when we are learning so we’re not staring at screens all day,” said one student who participated in the three-minute video.

“Michigan students are fortunate to have creative educators like Ms. DeGowske,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “The Algonquin Elementary School experience is a great way to enhance and beautify our surroundings and increase student achievement at the same time.”

Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator campaign has featured educators and supporters of Michigan educators who share their passion for education. The full playlist can be found on the #proudMIeducator YouTube page.

If you know a proud Michigan Educator who should be considered for a future video feature, please email MDE-PME@Michigan.gov.

In MDE’s effort to support learners and learning, the department strives to help increase the numbers of certified teachers, especially in areas of shortage, one of the eight goals of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan

The state’s efforts to address the teacher shortage and encourage more people to pursue a teaching career in Michigan include, but are not limited to, scholarships to future educators; stipends for student teachers; student loan repayments; Future Proud Michigan Educator EXPLORE grants; the Future Proud Michigan Educator LAUNCH program; Grow Your Own grant programs to help support staff and students to become teachers; Talent Together; expedited reciprocity for teachers and counselors certified in other states; a rural credentialing hub; and tuition reimbursement for special education teachers.
