December 19, 2019 – The Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) revoked the prepaid funeral and cemetery sales registration of Royal Funeral Home, Inc. – effective December 17, 2019 – for violations of the Prepaid Funeral and Cemetery Sales Act (Prepaid Act). LARA’s Corporations, Securities and Commercial Licensing bureau (CSCL) issued the final order and stipulation regarding the funeral home located at 281 Upton Avenue in Battle Creek, MI.
CSCL’s action follows an audit of Royal Funeral Home’s books and records that showed that – as of 1/31/19 – it failed to deposit at least $269,228 with an authorized escrow agent associated with approximately 92 prepaid contracts. Royal Funeral Home had only performed services for 20 of the 92 contracts, leaving approximately $192,204 neither deposited with an escrow agent nor refunded to contract buyers.
By settlement, Royal Funeral Home agreed to the immediate revocation of its registration, a $5,000 fine, and to make proper arrangements for the remaining prepaid contracts in its possession.
