Michigan GIS Advisory Group
Background
The Michigan GIS Advisory Group was established in 2024 and officially began to meet in 2025. This group is comprised of 17 geospatial leaders across multiple sectors within the state’s GIS community. The formation of an advisory group was outlined as a recommendation as part of a strategic plan for statewide GIS coordination completed in 2023. Through coordination and collaboration efforts, the Advisory Group will help support geospatial initiatives statewide. The strategic plan and GIS Advisory Group charter can be found in the documents section of this web page.
Purpose
The Michigan GIS Advisory Group exists to support Michigan Geographic Information Office (GIO) within the Center for Shared Solutions (CSS) of the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget (DTMB). As an advisory body, the Group's decisions are not binding upon DTMB CSS or the GIO. However, the Advisory Group utilizes knowledge and practices within the stakeholder community to better position Michigan's use of geospatial data and technology. The group helps to ensure that governments and organizations of all sorts can better leverage the vast collection of data and information that is collected, maintained, and utilized by multiple levels of government within the state.
Important outcomes to achieve the Group's purpose are to:
- Develop means to increases access to statewide geospatial data.
- Further the collection and update of widely used, high-quality, geospatial data.
- Create broader access to powerful, innovation tools, sophisticated data, and advance analytics.
- Improve statewide data interoperability through collaboration and implementation of standards.
- Protect existing and future investments in GIS through advocacy.
- Communicate key programs and initiatives through coordinated outreach.
This Advisory Group supports the coordination of relevant geospatial efforts across Michigan's GIS stakeholder community. The Advisory Group may determine that standing committees be constituted to affect long-term Advisory Group operations. Working groups may also be used to involve more experts and representatives for more specific technical or programmatic needs to support the DTMB GIO. The Advisory Group is structured to represent Michigan's geospatial community. Members of the Advisory Group work to bring information to the body, as well as disseminate information to interested and relevant parties.

Strategic Plan for Statewide Coordination
DTMB’s Center for Shared Solutions (CSS) completed a strategic plan in 2023 for statewide GIS coordination in the State of Michigan. As the state GIS Office, CSS coordinates statewide geospatial activities working with many stakeholders across multiple sectors within Michigan. The strategic plan serves as a guiding document to continue to improve statewide coordination over the next 5 years. The strategic plan initiative was used to develop a current baseline of statewide coordination in the state and develop recommendations for moving geospatial coordination and collaboration forward based on feedback from the GIS community across Michigan.
