Mitchell State Park - April 12, Beekeeping Clinic: A Beginner's Guide to Starting Your Hive
Beekeeping is for everyone – whether you have an orchard or a vegetable garden or are planning food plots with fruit trees for hunting, having pollinators is essential. This clinic will cover everything you need to know to get started with beekeeping and the vital role pollinators play in our environment.
Whether you're new to beekeeping or just looking to expand your knowledge, this class is designed for you. We’ll cover everything from bee biology and equipment to bee health and seasonal tasks. If you’ve already been keeping bees for a while, you’ll also benefit from the practical knowledge we’ll share to refine your skills and clear up any confusion you might have.
Topics Include:
- Beginner beekeeping: Getting started and what you need to know.
- Basic bee biology: Understanding workers, drones and queens in the hive.
- Beekeeping equipment: Essential gear, hives and accessories.
- Choosing your apiary location: Picking the best site for your bees and selecting the right honey bees.
- Installing your bees: How to install packages and nucs (nucleus colonies).
- Caring for bee health: Managing varroa mites and viruses and using integrated pest management.
- Seasonal tasks and time commitment: What to expect throughout the year and the time required as a new beekeeper.
- Keeping it legal: How to register your hives and understanding your responsibilities as a beekeeper.
Cost is $30.
To register for this class, go to Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses and click on the "Purchase a license" button. Sign in (using either a username and password or your ID and birthdate), and find the class under the Outdoor Skills Academy tab.
Cancellation policy: To cancel your registration, please contact our Customer Service help desk line at 800-737-6367. Cancellations made up to 14 days prior to the program will be completely refunded to the original form of payment. If you cancel after the two-week deadline, no refund will be issued.
