How can I get help removing a tree?
The DNR’s Urban and Community Forestry (UCF) program does not provide direct or financial assistance for private property tree removals. Indirect assistance information is provided below as suggestions for who else to contact for help. Be aware, in most cases financial assistance is not available or limited and the property owner will be responsible for all associated removal costs. It can be expensive to remove trees, especially if they are in poor condition or threaten people, property or utilities. Below are some places to start looking for help.
Tree Removal Resources
Arborists
Arborists are trained tree care professionals who charge for their services. If you hire an arborist, get quotes from two to three arborists and confirm they carry two types of insurance, both general liability and workers compensation.
Find a list of arborists in Michigan at the International Society of Arboriculture state website, ASM-ISA.org.
Insurance
If a tree falls and damages your home or any building on your property, contact your homeowner's insurance company. They might help with tree removal, and if the tree came from your neighbor's yard, your insurance may advise you on liability matters and whether you can pursue compensation from your neighbor’s insurance. If a tree falls on your car, your auto insurance might cover it, depending on your policy, so reach out to them, too.
Municipality
If the tree is located on municipal property, (e.g., between sidewalk and curb), contact your city, village, township or county for assistance.
Electric utility companies
Electric utility companies may provide tree trimming or removal of trees if they are overgrown, damaged or dead and are threatening their lines or equipment. Contact your local electric and gas utility provider to see if they offer assistance at utilitysearch.apps.lara.state.mi.us/search.
Hiring a reputable arborist or tee service company
Check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and review their tips to ensure you are choosing the right arborist and asking the right questions.
