Silver Lake ORV Area FAQs

  • All occupants must wear a seat belt in any motor vehicle with four or more wheels, including side-by-side vehicles, trucks, Jeeps and dune buggies. Those vehicles with automotive-type seating and fewer than four wheels must also equipped with a seat belt for each occupant.

    • All Michigan child passenger safety laws apply.
    • An approved automotive manufactured restraining device, such as a lap belt or three- or four- point harness, is an acceptable seat belt.
    • Any vehicle on which the operator straddles the seat, such as a motorcycle or an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), will be limited to the operator only as the sole occupant and no seat belt will be required.
    • Seat belts and restraining devices, other than factory installed, shall be secured by bolting to the vehicle floor, frame, or roll bar.
  • All Oceana County and State of Michigan roadways rules apply when towing inside Silver Lake State Park and once you pass the main entrance/fee collection booth.

    • Vehicles may only be towed using a ridged towing bar that includes safety chains.
    • A vehicle operator may tow only one vehicle or trailer at any time.
    • Vehicle operators must have the proper operator's or chauffeur's license.
    • In some cases, reflectors or stop lights are required on the towed trailer or vehicle.

  • Direct visual adult supervision means that supervision is not impaired by distance and must allow the adult the ability to direct the youth’s actions by verbal communications. Electronic amplification of verbal communications is not allowed.

  • Yes. You may use an ORV safety certificate issued by Michigan, another state, or a province of Canada.

  • No. Vehicles are not permitted on the lakeshore or water's edge. 

    You can park in the ORV area and walk to the Lake Michigan shoreline (approximately 50-100 yards). You may also walk to the lake through the pedestrian area of the dunes. 

  • Please call 911 or locate a park ranger on patrol.
