February 16, 2025: Lithuanian Independence Day

WHEREAS, the state of Michigan is pleased to join Lithuanian-Americans throughout Michigan in recognizing February 16, 2025, as Lithuanian Independence Day; and,
WHEREAS, on February 16, 1918, the restoration of an independent state of Lithuania, governed by democratic principles, was proclaimed with the signing of the February 16th Act of Independence; and,
WHEREAS, this year, we celebrate the 107th anniversary of Lithuanian independence; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is home to about 30,000 Lithuanians, one of the larger Lithuanian communities in the United States, whose Michigan origins date back to the late 19th century. Their occupations are diverse, all contributing to Michigan’s prosperity and well-being.
WHEREAS, Michigan’s Lithuanian-American citizens contribute greatly to the rich heritage and culture fostered in our great state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 16, 2025, as Lithuanian Independence Day in Michigan.
