March 17 -23, 2025: Family Medicine Week

WHEREAS, Michigan’s family physicians continually demonstrate their dedication to the health and well-being of our state’s residents and communities by providing whole-person, patient-centered care to individuals and entire families; and,

WHEREAS, family physicians have studied for a minimum of seven years from medical school through residency and have completed rigorous, specialized training in adult medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics-gynecology, general surgery, geriatric medicine, psychiatry/behavioral healthcare, and musculoskeletal care; and,

WHEREAS, this care is based on knowledge of the whole person in the context of the family, community, and social determinants of health, and is not limited by age, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or health condition; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan’s family physicians are uniquely qualified to provide physician-led team-based and evidence-based care that reduces costs to the healthcare system by emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention, thereby avoiding more costly hospital care; and,

WHEREAS, during public health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, family physicians work on the front lines to provide care, vaccinations, education, consultation, and medical supplies, helping to protect health and well-being and prevent the spread of illness;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 17 – 23, 2025 as Family Medicine Week in Michigan.
