February 17, 2024: Kosovo Independence Day

WHEREAS, the state of Michigan is pleased to join Albanian-Americans throughout Michigan in recognizing February 17, 2024, as Kosovo Independence Day; and,
WHEREAS, on February 17, 2008, the Republic of Kosovo, driven by an unwavering commitment to democratic principles, declared its independence from Serbia, solidifying Kosovo's emergence as a free and self-governing nation; and,
WHEREAS, Kosovo continues to uphold the values of sovereignty and self-determination, Kosovo’s declaration of independence underscored its dedication to democratic ideals, affirming its status as a thriving democracy in the global community; and,
WHEREAS, still today, Michigan’s Albanian-American residents continue to bring their rich culture and tradition to our state as they flourish wherever they reside, being helpful community members, hard-working business owners, and dedicated professionals; and,
WHEREAS, recognizing the contribution of Michigan in supporting democracy in Kosovo by helping to preserve peace through members of the Michigan National Guard who served in Kosovo as peacekeepers; and,
WHEREAS, the bond between Kosovo and Michigan is unique and strengthened by the shared values of liberty, democracy, and rule of law; the state of Michigan is pleased to join Albanian-Americans throughout Michigan in celebrating the 16th anniversary of Kosovo’s independence day;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan do hereby proclaim February 17, 2024, as Kosovo Independence Day in Michigan.
