Access to Community Resources
Summary
Counselors and health care staff assist families by providing resources to access services to meet the social, academic, behavioral, emotional, physical and other needs. These needs inhibit a family and child from being successful at school and at home.
Considerations
- Lack of identified resources such as food, transportation, health care, mental health supports for schools and families to access.
- A lack of one resource, such as transportation, may prevent a family from receiving another support, such as mental health services.
- Time for school staff to guide families in locating and accessing resources and supports in the community.
Suggestions
- Conduct an inventory of local food, clothing, transportation, health care, and mental health supports and services.
- Develop a list with contact information of community resources, such as a food banks and local health departments, to be provided to families.
- Assist schools in establishing pathways to assist families in receiving support and resources.
- Use school staff to make initial contact.
