Application Process
Nomination
People are invited to nominate educators for Michigan Teacher of the Year (criteria listed below). Nomination window is open from spring to fall. After the application window closes, nominated teachers are invited to apply (application requirements below) and receive instructions.
Application Round
In this round, nominated educators are invited to submit applications for Michigan Teacher of the Year. Reviewers score each application and top-scoring candidates advance to the Selection Round. All applicants will be informed of their standings.
Selection Round
Reviewers score applications in the Selection Round. This review process is conducted in a manner where the applicant's identity remains confidential. The highest scoring applicant from each region will be named the Regional Teacher of the Year. Ten regional teachers are selected.
Michigan Teacher of the Year Selection
In-person interviews of the ten Regional Teachers of the Year are conducted with a panel of educational partners for the purpose of selecting one teacher to be recognized as Michigan Teacher of the Year.

Criteria for Michigan Teacher of the Year
- Hold a current, valid Michigan teaching certificate
- Completed at least five successful years of teaching experience in Michigan
- Work directly with students in current role
- Not served as a Regional Teacher of the Year in the previous three years
- Recommended by someone other than self
- Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade educator
- Willing to commit to active membership on the Michigan Teacher Leadership Advisory Council (MTLAC) during the next school year if selected as a Regional Teacher of the Year
