Military Service Credit

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) recognizes the sacrifices and contributions of military personnel. To honor Michigan’s certified educators who are called to duty while holding a valid educator certificate, the Michigan Department of Education offers a service credit of up to 150 professional learning hours toward the renewal of his/her certificate.

A member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States or National Guard who is called to active duty and who, at the time of deployment, holds a valid educator certificate in Michigan, is entitled to service credit towards their certificate renewal, provided the educator is honorably released from that active-duty service. The Military Service Credit may be requested at any time after an individual is called to service and has been provided with official documentation detailing the military service type and dates served. The service credit may be requested even if a certificate has since expired.

To begin a request, an individual must complete the following:

  1. Email MDE-EducatorHelp@Michigan.gov requesting the Military Service Credit.
  2. The email must include official documentation detailing service that includes dates of deployment (such as a Leave and Earnings Statement).
  3. If additional information is needed, the educator will be contacted by email.

Approved hours will be added to the service member’s MOECS account in the form of State Continuing Educational Clock Hours (SCECH). Once uploaded, the service member must login to MOECS and complete a SCECH evaluation to have the hours added to his/her renewal total. After applying, a refund of application fees may also be requested.
