Approved CPR & First Aid Providers

Important! CPR/First Aid requirements for teacher certification have changed. Public Act 110 of 2023 sunsets the requirement in MCL 380.1531d for CPR/First Aid for initial certification.

Individuals first employed in classroom teaching on or after August 1, 2023, who do not already hold a valid CPR/First Aid card, must complete CPR/First Aid as part of the 15 days of professional development described in MCL 380.1526.

Michigan Compiled Law (MCL) 380.1526 requires teachers employed in classroom teaching on or after August 1, 2023, to complete coursework in all of the following as part of their new teacher professional development:

  • First Aid (FA)
  • Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

The CPR coursework must include a test demonstration on a mannequin and instruction in foreign body airway obstruction management.

The courses and certifications must be completed within the first year of employment as a classroom teacher. These courses may be completed as one comprehensive course or may be completed in separate courses. All three legal requirements must be completed. Individuals who have successfully completed a course and hold the valid certification are not required to complete the course if documentation is provided to their local district.

Requirements for CPR/First Aid Professional Learning for Teachers in Their First Year of Employment

Fully online courses are not acceptable; learning First Aid and Adult & Pediatric CPR requires demonstration and practice. Blended courses (online, combined with traditional face-to-face) and hybrid courses (web-based, live video instructor training plus traditional) are permissible modes for completing CPR and First Aid when available through the providers specified within this guidance.

Physical Limitation Exemption

  • MCL 380.1526 provides an allowance for educators who are unable to fulfill CPR/FA requirements due to physical limitations. Teachers should provide employers written, dated, and signed documentation on letterhead from a physician/health care provider to be considered for an exemption from CPR/FA.

Advanced Level CPR/FA Courses

  • Approved organizations offering advanced level CPR/FA course(s) with training that surpass the noted requirements will be acceptable for fulfilling training once appropriate documentation is provided to the EPP or MDE. Documentation must be submitted in the form of a letter on letterhead, signed and dated by an administrator of an organization that provides training in CPR and First Aid.
  • To request to have an advanced level CPR/FA course added or to become a newly approved organization offering CPR/FA, please email MDE-EducatorHelp@Michigan.gov.
