Adding an Endorsement to a MI Teaching Certificate

An endorsement can be added to a Michigan teaching certificate by way of one of the following paths:

  1. Complete a state-, country-, or federally recognized Indian tribe-approved endorsement program through an approved Educator Preparation Provider (EPP) and pass the appropriate Michigan Test(s) for Teacher Certification (MTTC). The program can be completed through a Michigan institution including a Michigan approved alternative route provider, or a teacher preparation institution located in another state, country, or federally recognized Indian tribe.
  2. Hold the endorsement on a valid or expired standard teaching certificate issued by a state, country, or federally recognized Indian tribe plus testing or experience (see below). Temporary or non-renewable out-of-state certificates are not accepted for adding an endorsement.

An application to add an endorsement to a valid Michigan teaching certificate is created through the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS).

Endorsement Programs Completed Outside Michigan

Teachers who have completed endorsement programs or hold a teaching certificate in another state, country, or federally recognized Indian tribe will be evaluated by the Office of Educator Excellence (OEE). The cost of an evaluation is $50 and does not guarantee the endorsement will be approved. Applicants must satisfy all the requirements for the endorsement and pass the corresponding Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) before the endorsement can be added to the Michigan teaching certificate. Teachers should not take the MTTC until the OEE evaluation is completed, and an evaluation report is issued indicating the test that must be passed. The MTTC is not required in cases where the educator holds the endorsement on a teaching certificate issued by another state, country, or federally recognized Indian tribe and has taught successfully for a minimum of three years in a position for which that endorsement was valid.  The experience must be within the jurisdiction of the certificate and accrued after the issuance of the certificate and endorsement.

Michigan Endorsement Programs

Teachers who complete endorsement programs at Michigan institutions must work directly with their certification officer at the institution to have the endorsement added to their certificate. This includes receiving guidance on the appropriate test to take.

Placement

Flexibilities are available for staffing when a certified and properly endorsed teacher is not available for an assignment. Michigan certified teachers may work in subject areas or grade levels outside of those listed on their certificate by following the guidance on the Educator Staffing and Placement webpage. A permit is NOT needed for the first 90-calendar days a teacher is teaching outside of their areas of endorsement or grade level.
