Child and Adult Care Food Program Week Celebrates Millions of Meals Annually

Children and Adults in Need Benefit from Healthy Food

LANSING – Next week Michigan is celebrating a program that provides millions of healthy meals every year to children and adults in need.

March 16-22 is National Child and Adult Care Food Program Week. Michigan is celebrating the week under a proclamation from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) asks providers, educators, and students statewide to join in celebrating the importance of healthy meals.

Each year, over 5,000 family and group childcare homes, family and group adult care homes, and childcare centers across the state participate in the program. These facilities serve more than 6.2 million breakfasts, 7.3 million lunches, 12 million snacks, and 5.4 million suppers per year to children and adults in care.

“The Child and Adult Care Food Program supports Goal 3 in Michigan's Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, to improve the health, safety, and wellness of all learners,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “Children must have access to nutritious food to be able to learn. Residents of adult care facilities also benefit from this important program.”

The Child and Adult Care Food Program provides federal funds to non-residential child and adult care facilities to serve nutritious meals and snacks. The program plays a vital role in improving the quality of care by making it affordable for many families. The program’s goal is to improve and maintain the health and nutritional status of participants in care, while promoting the development of good eating habits.

Eligible child and adult care facilities include:

  • Licensed childcare centers.
  • Head Start programs.
  • Great Start Readiness Programs.
  • Public and non-public schools.
  • Afterschool care programs.
  • Emergency shelters providing residential and food services to children experiencing homelessness.
  • Family childcare homes, including relative-care providers.
  • Some private childcare centers.
  • Adult day service programs.
