LANSING – Five outstanding Michigan educators recently received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The Michigan Department of Education is recognizing the teachers for their achievements.

Michigan’s recipients are:

  • Shannon Houtrouw, Kalamazoo Area Mathematics and Science Center, Kalamazoo Public Schools, for mathematics.
  • Diana Matthews, Detroit Country Day School, for science.
  • Emily Pohlonski, Novi High School, Novi Community School District, for science.
  • Leigh Roehm, Saline Middle School, Saline Area Schools, for science.
  • Karen Sleno, Flushing High School, Flushing Community Schools, for mathematics.

“Our state is home to some of the best educators in the nation,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “Congratulations to each of the recipients for great dedication to the profession and outstanding service to our children.”

Established by Congress in 1983, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching program is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. It is the highest award that K-12 math and science teachers can receive from the U.S. government.

Teachers of mathematics or science from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. territories as a group (comprising America Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands), and schools operated in the United States and overseas by the Department of Defense Education Activity receive the award.

Presidential awardees receive a trip to Washington D.C., where they attend recognition events and professional development opportunities. They also receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and a presidential certificate. They join an elite cohort of award-winning teachers who support and promote their state/jurisdiction as well as national science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching.
