LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) awarded two Cintas facilities with the Michigan Voluntary Protection Program (MVPP) Star award, recognizing the company’s outstanding commitment to workplace safety and health.
Cintas Corporation, a leading provider of workplace safety, uniform, and facility services, earned this prestigious designation for its Troy and Romulus locations, which have demonstrated exceptional safety standards and a strong commitment to employee well-being. Both facilities operate as warehouse and distribution centers for first aid and safety services.
Workplace safety is a critical priority in Michigan, where an average of 40 workplace deaths occur each year. Programs like MVPP play a vital role in reducing these tragedies by encouraging companies to go beyond minimum safety requirements. By promoting strong safety and health management systems, MVPP helps prevent workplace injuries and illnesses, ensuring more Michigan workers return home safely each day.
“Achieving MVPP Star status is a significant accomplishment that reflects a deep-rooted commitment to workplace safety and health,” said Tarah Kile, MIOSHA Consultation Education and Training Division Director. “Both facilities have demonstrated a strong safety culture through robust employee engagement, ongoing safety training, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Cintas’ dedication to workplace safety has resulted in zero recordable injuries over multiple years, setting a high standard for safety excellence in their respective industries.”
As Michigan’s most prestigious workplace safety and health recognition, only 27 companies currently hold MVPP Star status. These sites serve as mentors to other companies interested in strengthening their safety and health management systems.
Cintas now has four MVPP sites in Michigan and 137 Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) sites nationwide — the most of any company in the country.
Identifying best practices is vital to the MVPP continuous improvement process. Among Cintas’ best practices are:
- Cintas Romulus – Operates as a warehouse and distribution center, supplying safety training, first aid supplies, cabinets, and personal protective equipment. The site fosters a safety-first culture through employee-driven initiatives such as the Ergo Cup Challenge and Safety Observation Program. Employees actively engage in regular training, near-miss reporting, and continuous safety discussions to identify and correct hazards before incidents occur.
- Cintas Troy – Specializes in selling and servicing first aid and safety supplies for businesses in the Detroit area. Management prioritizes safety by ensuring employees actively participate in hazard identification, self-inspections, and continuous safety improvements.
“Earning VPP certification requires a collaborative approach with the shared goal of eliminating workplace injuries,” said Stephen Jenkins, Cintas Vice President of Health & Safety, whose department oversees the company’s VPP certification process. “Our positive discontent pushes us to achieve the highest possible standards and has helped us to earn another VPP certification. We are incredibly proud of our employee-partners and their efforts to maintain healthy and safe worksites.”
MVPP Program
MIOSHA established the MVPP program in 1996 to recognize employers with exemplary safety and health management systems that go above MIOSHA requirements. The MVPP program is open to all qualifying Michigan employers with injury and illness incident rates below the industry average for the past three years.
To earn MVPP Star status, companies undergo a rigorous application process, including a comprehensive safety and health program review, site visits, and employee interviews to verify that the workplace meets and exceeds MIOSHA’s strict safety and health criteria.
