Michigan's AmeriCorps Alum Spotlight
Alum of the Month – March 2025: Lydia Dominguez, MCAH
Lydia Dominguez served from 2021-2023 at Community Action House in Holland, MI under the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness AmeriCorps Program. The Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness AmeriCorps Program (MCAH) is a statewide program serving individuals experiencing or at-risk of homelessness. The focus of the program is to provide direct, targeted services to those in need to assist them with obtaining and maintaining safe, affordable housing and to increase self-sufficiency in the areas of income, life skills, and employment.
During her service term, Dominguez was responsible for providing outreach and resource generation for individuals facing homelessness. Her service term solidified her passion for helping those in need and reinforced her commitment to social responsibility. Her passion for service was clear, “Lydia is kind and enthusiastic. She brings new ideas and solutions to our team,” states current MCAH member, Jessica Fisher.
During her time as an AmeriCorps member, Dominguez was presented with experiences and challenges that enhanced her professional growth. Dominguez says that her time in AmeriCorps provided her with invaluable skills such as hands-on experience, teamwork, leadership, strong communication, and organizational skills, which were instrumental in her career development. Dominguez says that was her time serving that helped her to where she is today, “my AmeriCorps service was a transformative experience that significantly contributed to my personal growth and development. Service helped me develop resilience, adaptability, and a strong sense of purpose. I learned to step out of my comfort zone, tackle complex problems, and lead initiatives that positively impact the community.”
After completing her term, Dominguez was offered a position at her host site, Community Action House. She is now the Outreach Specialist for the organization. Dominguez also serves on the Executive Committee at the Lakeshore Housing Alliance and is on the Board of Directors at My House Ministry, both organizations helping those facing homelessness.
Dominguez is grateful for her time serving in AmeriCorps stating, “my AmeriCorps service was a pivotal chapter in my life that deepened my understanding of social issues and the importance of community involvement. It gave me a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment. Each day, I had the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and my community. I continue to seek out opportunities within my career to contribute to community development, social justice, and sustainability.”
