CRA Issues Public Health and Safety Advisory Reminder Regarding MCT Oil

In June 2024, Michigan’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) issued a technical bulletin announcing that MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil would be added as a target analyte for marijuana vape cartridges as part of the agency’s Sampling and Testing Technical Guidance for Marijuana Products. In September 2024, the CRA reminded Michigan’s cannabis industry of the new testing requirement, which went into effect October 1, 2024.

Cannabis consumers are reminded again that marijuana vape cartridges tested prior to October 1, 2024 may contain MCT oil. All regulated vape cartridges in the State of Michigan’s licensed cannabis industry should include the tested date on the product packaging:

MCT oil, commonly derived from coconut or palm oil, is primarily used in oral supplements and food products. However, when aerosolized and inhaled, MCT oil may pose dangers to respiratory health. Inhalable marijuana products that fail testing for MCT oil cannot be remediated.

Marijuana consumers who have experienced adverse reactions after using these products should report their symptoms and product use to their health care providers. Consumers are encouraged to also report any adverse reactions to marijuana product to the CRA via the Adverse Reaction Form or by phone at 517-284-8599. A licensee that becomes aware of any adverse reactions to a marijuana product must notify the CRA and enter the information into METRC within one business day.

Questions about this advisory notice should be emailed to the CRA’s Operations Support Section at CRA-Compliance@michigan.gov. For more information about the CRA, please visit www.michigan.gov/CRA.
