State of Michigan named a finalist in the 2023 Government Experience Awards

The State of Michigan was recognized as a finalist for creating and delivering impactful digital services across platforms by the Center for Digital Government in their annual rankings announced in September.

The awards recognize the achievements and best practices of government entities who raise the bar on the experience of government services to create a better engaged constituency and a more responsive government. Michigan’s 2023 finalist placement continues a history of recognition for its services in this category:

  • first-place overall U.S. state government in 2021
  • finalist in 2020
  • fourth place overall in 2019
  • fifth place overall in 2018
  • fourth place overall in 2017.

The state was not eligible to submit in 2022, due to its first-place finish in 2021.

“With citizen and employee expectations continually evolving, government agencies are leveraging new technologies and processes to drive innovation through their digital experiences,” said Dustin Haisler, chief strategy and innovation officer, Center for Digital Government. “The leading government experiences have retained a human-centric approach to service delivery, incorporating digital equity, accessibility, and inclusion into all of their experiences.”

Expanding digital accessibility practices, strengthening the state’s unified brand experience across platforms, wrapping up the state’s website modernization project, and highlighting work around Michigan’s enterprise-wide human centered design services were featured in the state’s nomination.

“Our focus on creating simple and intuitive digital experiences across websites, applications, and social media have positioned us as an industry leader in building and maintaining a strong overall government experience,” stated Suzanne Pauley, Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget (DTMB) eMichigan director. “As we evolve our strategies and implement digital best practices, we remain committed to improving the digital services for the people who live, work, visit, and do business in Michigan.”

In addition to being recognized by the Center for Digital Government for overall government experience in 2023, Michigan was recently announced as a finalist for three 2023 National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) State IT Recognition Awards. The awards follow several 2022 IT excellence awards including a seventh consecutive award of an A rating as part of the Digital States Survey from the Center for Digital Government.
