Did you have to leave your job to be safe?
If you had to leave your job because of domestic violence, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits under a new Michigan law effective July 17, 2026.
If any of the following sound familiar and you need to leave your job as a result, you may qualify for unemployment benefits under a new provision.
- You were afraid of domestic violence at work or on the way to work.
- You left your job to get medical care, counseling, or legal help because of domestic violence.
- You left your job to get help or shelter from a domestic violence agency.
- You had to move/relocate to avoid domestic violence.
- You left work because you believed you needed to for your future safety and the safety of your family.
Financial control is a common tool used by abusers. Unemployment benefits can be a tool that helps you break free from this control, since it is money paid directly to you. You get to decide how to spend or save in whatever way is best for your situation.
All information you provide to UIA when applying for or receiving benefits is kept confidential. If you are concerned about information being mailed to your address, you can also provide an alternate mailing address that feels safe for you, such as a trusted friend’s or family member’s address, or use the Address Confidentiality Program.
Note: Other unemployment eligibility requirements still apply.
