The facility serves as the only correctional facility in Michigan that houses females. The facility provides all reception center processing which includes twenty four housing units for general population prisoners in level I, II, and IV, Special Alternative Incarceration (SAI), Residential Treatment Program (RTP), Acute Care, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Infirmary and Segregation.
Women's Huron Valley services include personnel, prisoner records, business office, maintenance operations, warehouse operations and houses Correctional Mental Health Programs Administration and the Washtenaw County Parole offices.
Our mission is to create a safer Michigan through effective offender management and supervision in our facilities and communities while holding offenders accountable and promoting their rehabilitation.
In 2018, the MDOC launched a Gender Informed Practice Assessment at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility. That assessment, and related work to learn what the department was doing well and what it could improve upon, led to the creation of this Strategic Plan. It is designed to make sure the facility offers programs and care that is gender responsive, trauma-informed and evidence-based and also focuses on the needs and professional development of the department's dedicated and valuable staff at WHV.
Adult Basic Education and General Education Development preparation classes are offered, as well as pre-release and life skills instruction. Vocational training is currently offered in Horticulture & Food Technology.
WHV’s Vocational Village opened in 2021 and is the first of its kind for women. The program offers training in high-demand trades: carpentry, cosmetology, 3D printing, robotics, truck driving, food technology and horticulture. Training in forklift operation is also offered as a stackable credential. All trades are gender specific to the female population to assist in Offender Success. The facility's Vocational Village is the 3rd Vocational Village site in the state. A Vocational Village site opened at Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility in Ionia in 2016 and at Parnall Correctional Facility in Jackson in 2017. The only prison braille program in the State, the Michigan Braille Transcribing Fund (MBTF), opened its second location at this facility in 2021.
All facets of the Michigan Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative are offered on site. Programs are gender responsive and trauma informed. Prisoners have access to religious programs, substance abuse treatment, psychological services, and general library and law library services.

The facility has two perimeter security fences with electronic detection systems. Security cameras are located throughout the facility and perimeter. Vehicles with armed personnel patrol the perimeter.
