June 2-8, 2024: State Veterans Homes Recognition Week

WHEREAS, State Veterans Homes provide vital skilled nursing care and services to those veterans who’ve nobly worn our nation’s cloth in service and their dependents; and
WHEREAS, the cornerstone for Michigan’s first State Veterans Home was placed on June 3rd, 1886 in the City of Grand Rapids, on the same campus it operates today; and
WHEREAS, Michigan has been proudly serving veterans and their loved ones in its State Veterans Homes since 1886, uninterrupted, caring for veterans from the Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, the Global War on Terrorism, and other times of peace and conflict; and
WHEREAS, Michigan now has State Veterans Homes in Grand Rapids since 1886, in Marquette since 1981, and in Chesterfield Township since 2021; and
WHEREAS, Michigan’s State Veterans Homes fulfill a vital commitment – a promise – owed by our citizenry to those who’ve stood to defend our nation, by providing excellent care and quality of life to veterans when they need it most; and
WHEREAS, Michigan remains stalwart in its commitment to recognizing and honoring our veterans, and the staff, families, volunteers, and communities that provide them this care and quality of life at Michigan Veteran Homes; and
WHEREAS, in observance of this 138th year of Michigan providing care and enriched lives to our veterans and their loved ones in our State Veterans Homes;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 2 – 8, 2024, as State Veterans Homes Recognition Week in Michigan.
