WHEREAS, annually in April, the United States observes National Minority Health Month to highlight the importance of improving the health of racial and ethnic minorities and reducing health disparities; and,
WHEREAS, annually, April 11 – 17 is recognized nationally as Black Maternal Health Week, founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, which amplifies the voices of Black Mamas and centers the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements; and,

WHEREAS, we must address the root causes of Black maternal morbidity and mortality through systemic change, social justice work, mental health, breastfeeding and doula care support, with access to equitable health services and programs; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan can ensure Black families have the same opportunities to achieve optimal well-being and eradicate negative maternal health outcomes;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 11 – 17, 2023, as Black Maternal Health Week in Michigan.
