Steffany Muirhead, Chief of Staff

Steffany Muirhead-James came to the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) with over 33 years of distinguished leadership. Prior to joining MVAA as Chief of Staff in July of 2024, she worked in various departments where she held several leadership roles. Steffany brings unmatched expertise in public sector strategy, child welfare, workforce development, unemployment insurance, advocacy and minority/small business advancement. A trusted advisor and senior leader, she has shaped impactful programs across the State of Michigan, always with a focus on equity, community engagement, and sustainable growth.

Steffany leverages her decades of insight by empowering people and organizations to build and improve their capacity, navigate government systems, and implement transformative strategies with lasting impact.

Steffany brings extensive experience in supporting diversity, equity and inclusion. She fosters inclusive workplace cultures, and she was given the Trailblazers Award for implementing several Employee Resource Groups (ERGs).

Steffany’s passion and dedication to helping others is exemplary. She is an avid believer of giving back and supporting her community. Steffany is a native Detroiter, and a devoted wife to an army veteran. She has her Bachelor of Arts degree, from Michigan State University and she also possesses a master’s degree in social work from Wayne State University.
